TANNING TIPS!

Island Sun Tanning is a Smart Tan Trained and Certified Tanning Salon that has been recognized by Looking Fit as one of the Top 250 Salons for 8 years in a row.

We practice Smart Tanning which means we follow the golden rule of tanning which is "DON'T EVER SUNBURN".

Whether tanning indoors or outdoors, the process involves ultraviolet rays which stimulate the skin cells that produce melanin, which is the pigment that makes your skin tan.

When you are tanning, you are exposed to two types of UV light.  UVA and UVB.  All tanning units use different combinations of these two tanning rays.

Tanning indoors in a controlled environment is the smartest way to avoid sunburn as you are following an exposure schedule that is designed for your skin type.

Following are a few precautions you should take in order to maximize your tanning experience.

USE SPF's WHEN ENJOYING THE OUTDOOR SUN: Island Sun carries a full line of SPF's for your use in the hot outdoor sun.  Be sure to apply liberally and often.

USE EYE PROTECTION: We supply eye protection for your use and offer several different selections for sale. Simply closing your eyes, or covering with a towel is not adequate protection against possible long term eye injury. http://www.eyepro.net

USE LIP PROTECTION:  Your lips do not produce melanin and will dry out and sunburn easily unless you use a lip balm with a desired level of sunscreen.

PROTECT YOUR HAIR:  Just as your hair fades in the outdoor sun, it will also fade while tanning indoors.  We offer a cap for your hair that will protect it from the UV rays.

PROTECT YOUR NAILS:  If you have a french manicure, your nails will discolor with exposure to UV light. We offer tips you can wear to protect your manicure. *FYI ~ remember if using an indoor tanning lotion that contains bronzers, be sure to wipe the lotion from your nails before entering the tanning unit. Bronzers will discolor your nails.

MEDICATION ALERT: If you are taking any medications, please check with your doctor or pharmacist and check the bottle for a warning for exposure to sunlight while on these medications.  Some medications can cause reactions with UV light.

USE AN APPROVED INDOOR TANNING LOTION: You can easily maximize your tanning results by using a tanning accelerator or maximizer approved for indoor tanning. Not only will an approved lotion increase your tanning results by 40% to 60%, the UV light will draw moisture from the lotion rather that from your skin.

MOISURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE!: Because moisturized skin tans best, we highly recommend you moisturize before, during and after your tanning session.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BURN BEFORE YOU CAN TAN: Sunburned skin is damaged skin. Many people grew up thinking that your skin needs to get pink or red in order to get a tan. The real truth is that any pinkish or redness to the skin is actually sunburn (erythema).  Smart Tanners know to tan in moderation. Never rely on the color of your skin to tell you to get out of the sun. Overexposure to UV light isn't evident somtimes until several hours after your tanning session.

REMEMBER ~ If you tan in moderation, follow our FDA guidelines on a minimum of 24 hours between each tanning session, wear the recommended protection for your eyes, lips, hair and nails, and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize, and NEVER SUNBURN, you will have a beautiful long-lasting tan.
